Inaugural "Symphony-at-the-Pier"
And

3rd Annual North Vancouver “Party-at-the-Pier”

Celebrating Our Maritime Community

The Lower Lonsdale Business Association is excited to announce that they will be presenting North Vancouver’s Symphony/Party-at-the-Pier, Celebrating Our Maritime Community, at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue and the adjacent piers on Saturday & Sunday, September 5 & 6, 2009 (Labour Day Weekend).  Everyone is invited to participate and most of the events are free!

The Party is modeled after the successful City of North Vancouver’s signature centennial event held at the same location in 2007, which drew over 6,000 visitors.  Last year’s event was also a great success and this year’s will be bigger and better than ever with family-friendly events happening throughout the weekend.

Party-at-the-Pier will host numerous marine-themed activities and displays, along with entertainment on the Burrard Drydock and St. Roch Piers Stages, offering something for all musical tastes and ages.

The 2009 event will feature a special concert with North Shore’s own treasure Sinfonia featuring B.C.’s own iconic fiddler, Daniel Lapp for an evening symphony treat on the Pier Saturday, September 5 at 7:30 pm.

On Sunday, September 6th there will be an action packed day of entertainment from 11 am – 4 pm for all ages to enjoy.

Some of the lower mainland’s best musical talent is on board and we are thrilled that it includes four of North Shore’s own; Canada’s first taiko youth ensemble Chibi Taiko; family entertainer Norman Foote known for his irreverent comedy and skillful music; The North Shore Celtic Ensemble, a
culturally diverse group of young gifted musicians performing lively original Celtic-based orchestral and folk music using string instruments, percussion and a selection of wind instruments.; and the Big Bang Jazz Band (North Shore drummer), who are at the forefront of a new wave of young traditional jazz musicians.

Rounding out the diverse line-up is singer/songwriter/guitarist and recent winner of the Sonic Bids Nashville Song Contest Babe Gurr
who has been turning heads for years with her unique blend of roots/blues/pop; Shona Le Mottée Band Featuring Tim Readman, a four piece Celtic band made up of the cream of Vancouver’s Celtic scene; festival favorites Bobs & Lolo, who continue to inspire their audiences with an appreciation for the natural world through music, movement and make-believe; and the Vancouver Naval Veterans Band who add pomp and pageantry to any event in which they perform.

Look out for the roving performers on site, including an amazing stilt walker, fantastic face painters and Mr. Flowers, who will be making balloon creations, amusing young and old alike.

Festivities will also include the spectacular Seaspan Tugboat Ballet Show (great vantage point for viewing at the Burrard Drydock Pier), a demonstration from the City of North Vancouver’s fireboat, a marine themed bouncy castle and the North Vancouver Museum & Archives vintage clothing display in the PGE Station.

Local artisans will also be on hand displaying and selling such things as locally inspired paintings, pottery and jewellery.

There will also be a great selection of food and beverage available for purchase some of which will include: fish & chips, fish tacos, corn on the cob, ice cream treats, fresh lemonade, etc.

Advance tickets for the very popular Port Metro Vancouver harbour tours on board the Magic Charm will go on sale August 1st.  Tickets will be priced at $2 for children (12 and under) and $5 for adults for sailings at noon, 1pm and 2pm.  All proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit the North Shore Neighborhood House.

The Party-at-the-Pier could not be possible without the generous support of our major sponsors for the event which include Port Metro Vancouver, Neptune Bulk Terminals, Western Stevedoring, Seaspan International, Vancouver Pile Driving, The City of North Vancouver, The City and District of North Vancouver’s Office of Cultural Affairs, Intracorp Harbour View Ltd. Partnership, RBC Royal Bank, Ratcliff & Co. LLP and our media sponsor the North Shore Outlook.

The Lower Lonsdale Business Association also organizes the annual Lower Lonsdale Fall Festival, scheduled for Sunday, September 27 on W. 1st Street between Lonsdale and Chesterfield and the annual Christmas Festival of Lights & Carol Ship Celebration held in December at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue.
